Porini Trees — Sangwali Pilot
Zambezi Region, Namibia (former Caprivi Strip)
Reporting period: 2019-06 – 2025-12 · Generated for demonstration · Partner: WWF Namibia · Wuparo Conservancy
1. Summary
| Trees monitored | 1353 |
| Healthy | 1076 (82%) |
| Stressed | 180 |
| Lost | 59 |
| Sub-meter (VHR) hero trees | 14 |
| Adopted trees | 5 |
| Mean NDVI change vs baseline | +0.005 |
| Estimated CO₂ stored (living trees)* | 373.5 t CO₂e |
| Real-data lineage | 100% of trees |
2. Methods
Individual tree locations are derived from the free Meta / WRI 1 m global canopy height map; per-tree vegetation health is sampled monthly from Sentinel-2 (10 m) as NDVI; 14 “hero” trees additionally have crowns delineated by DeepForest on purchased SkyFi 30–50 cm VHR. Each observation is stored append-only with its source, confidence and model version. (This demonstration uses simulated data shaped to that exact pipeline.)
3. Health & survival
Of 1353 monitored trees, 1076 are healthy, 180 show drought stress and 59 were recorded as lost over the period. Stress and loss are detected from sustained NDVI decline against a self-referenced seasonal baseline; lost trees are flagged and support is redirected, never silently dropped.
4. Community stewardship (PES)
Protection is delivered through Payments for Ecosystem Services to community stewards in the Wuparo Conservancy, managed with WWF Namibia. Disbursement is linked to verified tree survival. No carbon credits are issued.
| Tabita — Wuparo North block | 357 trees |
| Joseph — Kwando floodplain edge | 568 trees |
| Maria — Wuparo South block | 428 trees |
5. Detection accuracy
Detector validated by visual photo-interpretation of 99 reference trees across 3 sample tiles on the Maxar dry 2023-08-19 + wet 2024-02-12 · 0.46 m scene: precision 84%, recall 77%, F1 0.80.
| Tile A — shrubby savanna + clump | TP 24 · FP 3 · FN 5 |
| Tile B — scattered savanna / slope | TP 16 · FP 4 · FN 5 |
| Tile C — sparse sand + clump | TP 13 · FP 3 · FN 5 |
| Tile D — drainage edge / scattered | TP 12 · FP 3 · FN 4 |
| Tile E — woodland edge | TP 11 · FP 2 · FN 4 |
Numbers shown are the prior calibrated measurement (pre-Phase-0). At Phase-0's higher detection density, dense clumps are over-tagged and a precise manual count is unreliable — formal re-measurement now uses the /feedback human ground-truth (active-learning loop). Treat as indicative.
6. Data provenance & integrity
Every tree carries an immutable identifier and a versioned, append-only observation log. Datapoints are never edited, only superseded — providing an auditable record for donors and third-party verifiers.
*CO₂ values are hedged canopy-allometry estimates for illustration only and do not constitute issued carbon credits. Report generated 15 Jun 2019–2025 from the Porini Trees demonstration dataset.
