Porini Trees — Sangwali Pilot

Zambezi Region, Namibia (former Caprivi Strip)

Reporting period: 2019-06 – 2025-12 · Generated for demonstration · Partner: WWF Namibia · Wuparo Conservancy

2. Methods

Individual tree locations are derived from the free Meta / WRI 1 m global canopy height map; per-tree vegetation health is sampled monthly from Sentinel-2 (10 m) as NDVI; 14 “hero” trees additionally have crowns delineated by DeepForest on purchased SkyFi 30–50 cm VHR. Each observation is stored append-only with its source, confidence and model version. (This demonstration uses simulated data shaped to that exact pipeline.)

3. Health & survival

Of 240 monitored trees, 199 are healthy, 21 show drought stress and 13 were recorded as lost over the period. Stress and loss are detected from sustained NDVI decline against a self-referenced seasonal baseline; lost trees are flagged and support is redirected, never silently dropped.

4. Community stewardship (PES)

Protection is delivered through Payments for Ecosystem Services to community stewards in the Wuparo Conservancy, managed with WWF Namibia. Disbursement is linked to verified tree survival. No carbon credits are issued.

5. Detection accuracy

Detector validated by visual photo-interpretation of 56 reference trees across 3 sample tiles on the Maxar WorldView-2 · 2023-08-19 · 0.468 m scene: precision 84%, recall 68%, F1 0.75.

Tile B — scattered savannaTP 10 · FP 4 · FN 6
Tile C — open woodland / larger treesTP 10 · FP 2 · FN 5

Single interpreter on the same imagery used for detection; dry-season scene (some trees brown/low-NDVI); small sample (~0.07 km²). Treat as indicative, not certified.

6. Data provenance & integrity

Every tree carries an immutable identifier and a versioned, append-only observation log. Datapoints are never edited, only superseded — providing an auditable record for donors and third-party verifiers.

*CO₂ values are hedged canopy-allometry estimates for illustration only and do not constitute issued carbon credits. Report generated 15 Jun 2019–2025 from the Porini Trees demonstration dataset.
